Nerja does not have its own golf course yet, but three good ones sit within about 35 minutes, and this guide comes from years of actually playing them, not from brochures. Here is where to go depending on the round you want.
Baviera Golf, 20 minutes away, is the closest and the everyday choice. Designed by José María Cañizares, it plays fairly flat on the front nine and friendly for all levels, with sea views coming into play on the back nine. The facilities are excellent, including an underground parking garage you will be grateful for on a hot day. Book directly on the club's own site for the best rates, and in summer the twilight deals after 4 PM are the smart play.
Añoreta, 25 minutes west, is the challenge. Built into the hills with elevation changes, blind shots and water everywhere, it tends to frustrate first-timers and then grow on you by the second or third round. Take a buggy, use a GPS app, and enjoy a course that rewards knowing it. The restaurant terrace afterwards is one of the nicest in the area.
Los Moriscos, 35 minutes east, is the unique one, a flat course right on the beach with the Sierra Nevada in the background. Play early before the coastal wind picks up, then walk straight onto the sand afterwards. And if you are willing to drive an hour, Parador de Málaga, Guadalhorce and Granada Club de Golf are all worth the trip.
